crasse — DIRT

[KR-ass] (n. f.) The man was so crass he was like an evolutionary detour off the Homo Sapiens route and, wherever he wandered, he made the partygoers cringe. He palmed his glass in a grubby hand and gulped wine sloppily. He never made a joke you didn't cringe at. He ogled the ladies in their evening dresses with a self-satisfied grin. Nobody could remember inviting the oaf. "Look at that brute," they would say, "He's so crass." Although it has come to mean so much more in English, the word was culled from the French crasse, which vulgarly means dirt. Fitting no?
