pied — FOOT

[PEE-ye] (n. m.) Fanciful, old family or simply rich folks might have a primary residence someplace and a pied-à-terre someplace else, preferably a swanky city so they can visit the opera. The French term very literally means foot-on-earth. It's as if they have a place they can touch down on for a spell, even thread barefoot on safely. Not like in those god-awful hotels, right darling?
